Distress Signal 2014 HDV colour, sound (23, 40 and 40
seconds)
An audiovisual intervention in three parts exploring the
maritime distress signal SOS. The word 'Distress' comes from the Latin distringere,
'to stretch apart'. Pushing a morse code signal to its highest and lowest
pitch, sound is compressed and stretched as high definition images are
obliterated by light, preventing effective communication and opening up the perceptual gap between seeing and hearing.
Commissioned for the film screening 'Bodies of Water' by
curator and film maker Kayla Parker, which ran alongside
'The Power of the Sea', an exhibition at the RWA Galleries Bristol from April to July 2014.
