Knowing Without
Touching 2003
Video
projection, black and white, silent 60 min loop
Knowing Without Touching was projected in darkness into the back
of one of three apsidal spaces in the crypt
of Gloucester Cathedral.
Filmed in the
nave of the cathedral at night, footage of ornate medieval architecture
partially revealed by the light of a hunting lamp was projected onto a
contrasting architectural space. Like some strange, crepuscular ghost, the
image crept slowly across ancient, textured walls, appearing to hover in an
uncertain space. A kind of
architectural ‘palimpsest’ was created, disorientating and fascinating
at once.
As the video
gradually decayed through repeated playing, it became grainier, more ambiguous
and tactile. The work was not possible to document in situ due to very low
light levels.
A companion
piece, In The Presence Of,
was projected from another apse.
