Stair
2001
Rubber and felt underlay, 15 x 9 x 5
feet. Slade School of Art MFA Show
2001
Stair partially blocked an arch between
two spaces – one light, one dark.
The viewer had to push past it to access the space beyond. The piece
smelt strongly of rubber and cloth; on close inspection the felt contained tiny
elements of broken down pink clothing.
This solid heap of matter seemed caught between a state of fluidity and
solidity, compressing time and space.
In the
light space (pictured here) was the first cast of Forbitten Words,
bolted into the wall opposite.
In the dark space beyond was Video (I See), a silent projection
work. All three works refer to our
perceptions of sound and silence, the visualisation of utterance and the
formation of language, in different ways.
